Shopify product page SEO is the work that makes a specific product URL easy to find, easy to understand and easy to buy. It has four layers: the metadata Shopify renders from your product record, the description and images you supply, the structured data and Merchant Center feed Google reads, and the internal links that connect the page to the rest of your catalogue. Shopify handles the plumbing well; the merchant still decides the copy, the data and the merchandising.
For an Indian D2C store that means INR pricing that matches checkout, GST-inclusive pricing, UPI and cash on delivery messaging, and shipping estimates that reflect your actual courier. Getting the search side right is also how a brand built by a professional website build keeps compounding traffic after launch.
Key Takeaways
• Shopify generates your product H1, title tag and meta description from the product record, so data quality is the lever you actually control.
• Shopify's own guidance is at least 250 words of unique descriptive text per product page, and a 70-character title limit with a 60-character recommendation.
• Product markup comes in two classes. Use merchant listing markup on pages you can buy from, and variant markup when a product has real size or colour options.
• Product images need real HTML <img> elements, descriptive filenames and specific alt text. Google does not index CSS background images.
• Structured data on the page plus a Merchant Center feed gives the widest set of eligible search appearances.
What Shopify product page SEO actually covers
Shopify renders product pages server-side from your admin data, and states that several SEO practices are handled automatically: content follows a logical hierarchy of categories, pages do not use iframes, and URLs use standard characters with a simple, readable structure (Shopify: Optimizing your site structure for search engines, retrieved 26 September 2026).
What remains in your hands: the product title that becomes the H1 and the URL handle, the SEO title and meta description, the description body copy, image filenames and alt text, catalogue data that feeds structured data and feeds, inventory state that drives availability, and internal links from menus, collections and editorial content. For a store being built from scratch, our website building service covers the catalogue model that makes all of this easier to maintain.### The four fields Shopify lets you write on
Shopify identifies four places where keywords belong: page titles, meta descriptions, ALT tags, and page body content (Shopify: Adding keywords for SEO to your Shopify store, retrieved 26 September 2026). On a product page that maps to the SEO title, the meta description, per-image alt text, and the description editor.
Titles and meta descriptions on product pages
Shopify allows up to 70 characters in a page title field and recommends staying at 60 characters or fewer so the title is not truncated in results. For meta descriptions it recommends roughly 160 characters (Shopify: Adding keywords for SEO, retrieved 26 September 2026).
Element — Pattern — Example
• SEO title — Product type + material or feature + brand — Khadi Cotton Kurta for Men, Handwoven, 100% Cotton
• Meta description — Specific benefit + proof point + action — Breathable handwoven khadi kurta in 100% cotton, cut for Indian summers. Free shipping over ₹999. Shop now.
• H1 (product title) — What the customer would call it — Handwoven Khadi Cotton Kurta, Men
Keep the H1 readable. Shopify builds it from the product title, so stuffing the title field is visible to shoppers as well as crawlers.
When the search engine shows something else
Search engines can rewrite titles and descriptions. To check your own work, open the page source and confirm the <title> and <meta name="description"> tags match what you entered; if they do, any difference in results comes from the search engine's own choice. Shopify also notes that recrawling and re-indexing can take several days to a few weeks (Shopify: Adding keywords for SEO, retrieved 26 September 2026).
Product descriptions that rank and sell
Shopify's guidance is concrete here: every page needs at least 250 words of descriptive text, and informational pages and blog posts at least 500 words. It also warns against copying a manufacturer's description, because that text is likely already published elsewhere (Shopify: Adding keywords for SEO, retrieved 26 September 2026).
• One sentence on what the product is and who it is for.
• Two or three sentences on material, fit or specification, with real numbers where they exist.
• A short usage or styling note that answers the objection you hear on WhatsApp.
• Fit, care and delivery specifics relevant to India.
• Links to the parent collection and complementary products, with descriptive anchor text.
Shopify's internal-linking guidance is explicit that descriptive link text beats generic anchors, and that every page should be reachable from navigation within about three clicks of the homepage (Shopify: Optimizing your site structure for search engines, retrieved 26 September 2026).
Product images, filenames and alt text
Images are where most catalogue SEO is won or lost quietly. Google's image guidance is specific (Google: Google image SEO best practices, page last updated 2 March 2026):
• Embed images with standard HTML image elements. Google finds images in the src attribute of an <img> element and does not index CSS images.
• Google supports images referenced in src in BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF.
• Filenames give light clues about the subject. mens-khadi-kurta-indigo-front.jpg is better than IMG00023.JPG.
• Alt text is the most important attribute for conveying what an image shows, and it must be a specific description. Google explicitly warns that stuffing alt text with keywords is a negative user experience and can make a site look like spam.
• You can influence which image Google selects for a result using primaryImageOfPage or the og:image meta tag.
Shopify lets you set alt text per product, collection and blog image, and warns that you cannot rename image files inside Shopify after upload. Fixing a filename means re-uploading the renamed file and deleting the old one (Shopify: Optimizing your site structure for search engines, retrieved 26 September 2026). That is tedious but one-off, and worth doing before the catalogue grows.
Product structured data and Merchant Center
Google splits product markup into two classes. Product snippets are for pages where people cannot directly buy the product, such as an editorial review. Merchant listings are for pages where customers can purchase from you, and support more detailed data such as sizing, shipping and return policy information. The required merchant listing properties also make a page eligible for product snippets, so implementing that set gives you the wider surface (Google: Introduction to Product structured data, page last updated 10 December 2025).
On a Shopify product page, verify that the rendered markup and the visible page agree on product name, description, image URL, brand, SKU or GTIN where you have one; active price and currency, with a strikethrough price for compare-at pricing; availability, kept in step with your inventory state; shipping rate, destination and delivery time; return policy, including window, method and fees; and review or aggregate rating data only where it is visible on the page and policy-compliant.
Google recognises three price types in markup: the active price, a strikethrough price used during a sale, and a member price tied to a loyalty tier. Sale periods can be bounded with validFrom and either validThrough or priceValidUntil (Google: Merchant listing structured data, retrieved 26 September 2026). This matters during Indian sale seasons, where a stale sale date is a feed warning you do not need.
Handling variants properly
For apparel, footwear, furniture and electronics, Google recommends the ProductGroup class with variesBy, hasVariant and productGroupID to group variations of a parent product, and notes that adding it also makes products eligible for variant information in merchant listing experiences (Google: Product variant structured data, retrieved 26 September 2026). If all colour and size options live on one URL with query parameters, use a single self-referencing canonical for the parent and describe variants in markup. If you give each variant its own indexable URL, make sure that page is genuinely useful and internally linked. Otherwise consolidate and stop creating thin pages.
Handles, canonicals and the URL decision
Shopify builds the product URL from the handle, which is generated from the product title and can be edited. A durable handle reads well and does not need to change: /products/handwoven-khadi-cotton-kurta-men. If you change one, set up a redirect from the old URL. Google does not generally infer site structure from URL strings; it analyses the linkages between pages, and the more internal links a page has, the higher its inferred relative importance (Google: Help Google understand your ecommerce website structure, page last updated 10 December 2025). Google also states that if category pages do not link directly to all products in a category, Googlebot may not find every product by crawling alone, and it strongly recommends linking to all products you want indexed, using a sitemap or Merchant Center feed where that is not possible.
India-specific product page SEO
A few things are specific to operating in India and are easy to get wrong:
• Currency and tax clarity. Show INR. If your prices are GST-inclusive, say so. Google requires the price in markup to match what a customer actually pays, and Merchant Center flags mismatches between feed and site.
• Payment methods. Mention UPI and cash on delivery only if you support them. A promise you cannot keep creates support load instead of sales.
• Shipping. Set realistic delivery estimates by pin code, and return a proper 404 for a filter combination with no results rather than redirecting to a generic not-found page (Google: Managing crawling of faceted navigation URLs, page last updated 18 December 2025).
• Size and specification. Indian apparel sizing, ayurvedic and grocery pack sizes and jewellery dimensions belong in the description, not in a PDF nobody opens.
• Language. English plus regional-language search terms matter more in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities than most merchants expect.
One practical note: the product page is where most revenue concentrates, so it is where theme and app work is worth spending. Our Shopify bundles guide covers a mechanic that adds products to that page.
How to measure product page SEO
Set this up once and it stops being guesswork: Search Console filtered by page type for impressions, clicks and average position on product URLs; the Rich Results Test and URL Inspection on a sample of product, variant and out-of-stock URLs after every release; Merchant Center diagnostics for feed disapprovals and price or availability conflicts; organic revenue per landing page in analytics; and a monthly sample of ten product URLs reviewed for title, description, alt text, schema validity and internal links.
If a category is ranking but converting poorly, the SEO work is done and the problem is elsewhere. Check the merchandising and the checkout before adding more content.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify handle product page SEO automatically?
Partly. Shopify states that content hierarchy, absence of iframes and readable URL characters are handled for you. Titles, meta descriptions, descriptions, image alt text, catalogue data, internal linking and anything an app injects remain merchant-controlled.
How long should a Shopify product description be?
Shopify's own recommendation is at least 250 words of unique descriptive text per page, with 500 words or more for informational pages and blog posts. Treat 250 words as a floor for simple products, not a target for every SKU.
Should every product variant have its own page?
Usually not. Use one canonical product page with variant selection, and describe the variations in ProductGroup markup. Give each variant a separate indexable URL only when that page serves a distinct search need and has its own content and internal links.
Does product page SEO improve rankings on its own?
It removes friction: Google can find, crawl, render and trust the page. Rankings also depend on content quality, internal and external authority, and many other systems. Complete product page SEO is necessary work, not a ranking guarantee. A repeatable test plan for the pages underneath it belongs in your QA automation coverage.
How do I know if my product structured data is valid?
Run a sample of live product URLs through the Rich Results Test, then confirm how Google sees the deployed page with URL Inspection in Search Console. Test a variant page and a sold-out page too, because availability states are where markup most often breaks.
Get a product page review before you scale the catalogue
Product page work is easy to defer and expensive to retrofit. If you want a review of a sample of your product URLs, send GrowMyStore the store link and the pages you are least confident about. We will separate structural defects from content gaps, and we will not change anything without your approval.
